Hello, hello! Today, I wanted to revive an old blog post that was really popular before The Ambition Upgrade was rebranded (it used to be Juliette Joy!)
All of the tips included in this post (and the worksheet) were exactly what I used to not only come up with my original biz name, but also to rename my biz easily and stress-free!
Let’s jump right in and tackle how to make choosing your business name fun & quick. I remember how annoyed, frustrated & confused I was when I couldn’t decide on my own business name. It probably took me a few weeks just to decide on my biz name, and this time around, when I rebranded, I chose the name and domain in only a few hours using the steps below!
So I wanted to share some quick tips on how to choose your business name. Btw, I also created a super fun & easy to follow worksheet taking you step by step on how to choose the perfect name.
Get clear on your brand
Before you decide on a name, you need to get clear on what you want your company to stand for & what services you’ll provide. If you’re a life coach for millennial moms, maybe “Tough Tools” isn’t the best option for your business name. Although there are plenty of ironic business names out there that work flawlessly, you just have to discover what you want to convey to your audience & how your business name will help with that. Check out the worksheet below to help you with this part, it’ll take you step by step to get clear on what you want your brand to be seen as.
See what you love about other brands
Once you’ve identified some major points about your business, do some research & see what others are doing. Observing your favorite brands & taking note of what attracts you to them & why will help you get even clearer on what kind of message you want to perpetuate to the world. This can be from individuals in your niche (such as blogging or coaches) or huge companies such as your favorite shoe company.
Start putting it together
Now that you have some clarity on what you want to convey, start putting things together. The fun part is playing around with different options to see what resonates with you. Make sure to stay authentic & while using inspiration is great, never copy anyone else!
Clear your mind
While this may seem counterproductive, as brainstorming potential names seems like the best way to create one, this tip was given to me by the first business coach I had. When I was struggling with choosing the “perfect” name, it placed a lot of pressure on me since this was a permanent thing. Her advice was to relax & do something that would take my mind off of it. She mentioned she comes up with her best ideas in the shower, & to try to do something that requires less thinking. Another thing to keep in mind is that while it is a big decision, no name will ever be “perfect”, you might love it now & hate it in 5 years. If you really dislike it, you always have the option of changing it (like I did!). But to prevent this from happening, try to pick a name that isn’t too trendy, but more classic, so it can last the test of time.
Use generator tools
Okay, so you’ve tried everything mentioned above & still nothing. To get some additional help, check out some business name generators online. You can run a google search to check out your options, but one I’ve seen that is particularly helpful is Bust-A-Name, where you can put in keywords that you created in steps 1 & 2, & it’ll generate available domains. Some other ones are shopify.com & businessnamegenerator.com. Keep in mind, you don’t have to use the exact names they create, but you can use it for additional inspiration to create your ideal name. Also, these generators usually also run a search for all related domain names, which is a huge plus to know that the particular website you want is available.
Test it out
While you def don’t want everyone putting in their input on your new business name to avoid getting overwhelmed with options & opinions, once you’ve decided on a top 3 (or maybe even just one that you love) run it by your close friends & family to see what they think. Remember the episode of 30 Rock where Jenna stars in the Rural Juror movie & no one knows what the actual title is until it’s written out? Yeah, we want to avoid that for your business. Make sure the name isn’t misleading, confusing, or unclear & preferably, has a nice ring to it that’s memorable & unique. Some other important places to check to make sure the name is available are online search engines such as the trademark search tool, your local state filing office to make sure the name isn’t in use, social media sites (check Namechk.com), and web domain search tools to make sure the website is available.
You’re all set to start creating!
